Perched on Castle Hill, overlooking Huddersfield, is Victoria Tower which was completed in 1899 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's reign. The history of human activity on the Castle Hill goes back over 4000 years. The site was developed as an Iron Age hill fort, surrounded by defensive ditches and ramparts. In the Middle Ages, there was a castle on the hill, of which the well remains. The present tower was built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee of 1897.

A group of 15 walkers, led by Tracey Parton, embarked on an 11-mile walk from The Golden Cock pub in Farnley Tyas. Their route took them to Victoria Tower (also known as Castle Hill), where they enjoyed great views despite the windy conditions. Continuing, they explored Almondbury Common, Myers Wood, Jenkinson Wood, and Thurstonland before returning to Farnley Tyas. Along the way, they encountered intricately carved motifs on numerous benches and stone guide posts. After the walk some of them relaxed with a drink at the The Golden Cock pub.
